‘My sweet mother thought me not to feel fear in chasing my dreams and as an obeying son I followed her advice’
Afize is a Sierra Leonean Model and also the CEO Of United Africa Wears.
I have been following Afize for a while now and I’ve seen him grow from grass to grace.
There is so much we all can learn from Afize’s story which is why I decided to interview him.
Below are the questions Afize was asked and his answers.
1. What is the inspiration behind your Modelling career and your Brand especially the name (Afize Stylish)?
I believed the people who believe in me! At the beginning of my career I was discovered by Spreetour photography and Model Management Company who showed me who I really can be behind the camera.
The eye-opening experience led me to take on other modelling jobs with fashion companies like Moss Bros, krisp Uk and here I am now.
Moreover, the idea of United Africa Wears got me inspired by the poverty in Sierra Leone and children in need.
It all started with the ‘Wristband’ appeal in 2016 when we decided to take it further.
2.Tell us about being a Sierra Leonean model in the United Kingdom and have you worked on gigs outside of the Sierra Leonean community?
I have found it challenging to be an African model in the industry but brick by brick I have gained my position and I built portfolio with some of the well-known brands in UK.
Apart from Miss and Mister Sierra Leone UK contest and Mr Africa International, majority of the jobs offered are outside the community.
However, I am planning to do more for my country by considering collaborations whenever the opportunity arises.
HA HA, that is a great question. I would say ever since the day I was born. My sweet mother thought me not to feel fear in chasing my dreams and as an obeying son I followed her advice.
4. What are some of the obstacles you’ve faced and how have you overcome them?
I can honestly say; the biggest obstacle is the time on my hands. There are so many things I want to do in terms of United Africa Wears, charities and modelling career that I find it difficult to find time for all.
Nevertheless, my family, I grasp every moment I can spend with my family and most importantly my son and I treasure that.
As for now, I must choose the most important tasks and prioritise.
5. I know you are a model, a very fine one in fact, how do you manage that with having a family of your own?
I believe that my family is who keeps me in CHECK. I am truly supported by my partner and of course my mum who is my back bone, they allow me to focus on myself more than anyone else. Of course, Mr T is there to make me laugh and keep my face wrinkle free HA HA!
6. What have your learnt so far from working as a model and having a brand?
I have learned to never give up and how hard it really is to juggle all at ones. I have also learned the importance of my family and loved ones as without their support I would be lost.
7. What makes you smile or how do you make your love one’s smile :)?
Mr Tariq, my morning star he is the smile of my life and all I ever wished for. Of course, you have to keep the rest of the family happy.
8. What do you like most about the Sierra Leonean culture?
Food!!! It is indeed my favourite part. But don’t get me wrong I also enjoy British food just hand me some pepper. But on a serious note, Sierra Leone has one of the best dishes in Africa.
9. What advice would you give to upcoming Sierra Leonean Models or Designers?
Believe in yourself, fall ten times and get up eleven. Remember you cannot fall below the ground. Success demands efforts. Once you have passion for something, it will make you the humblest person in the world. Stay focused!
10.How can we find you on social media?
You can find me on most social media sites under Afize Stylish or United Africa Wears.
